Marwan Kamel, based in Chicago and Tunis, is a multi-instrumentalist and composer who plays and performs on oud, nay, buzuq, guitar, violin, and hand-percussion, as well as others. His vision explores the colloquial textures of Western punk, hip-hop, electronic, and experimental musics and their boundaries and interaction with melodically-complex maqam modalities. He has composed original music for some small-scale films and has performed internationally with various projects at festivals such as Richard Thompson's Meltdown Festival in London, South by Southwest, Berlin Social Muscle Club, and Sundance Film Festival. Additionally, from 2020-2023, he hosted a weekly live looping show on Istanbul-based Root Radio. Recently, he completed a conservatory program at the Rachidia in Tunis and has taught regularly online and in Chicago for the past 10 years--establishing a successful music education program for refugees kids. In addition, he is researching rare classical maqam music and experimenting with new forms to create instrumental melodies and musical works at the nexus of past and future. His project Daily Maqam embodies all of these elements in hypnotic, modernistic, long-format improvisations building ethereal worlds that are born and die in the same moment.
Abdessamade Mason Zantow is a multi-instrumentalist and singer, student of the Arabo-Andalusian Muwashshah tradition under Ustadh Khaled Al-Hafez from Aleppo (Syria) and maqam (modal) music under Eric Ederer of the University of Southern California Santa Barbara Middle Eastern Music Ensemble. He has studied Hindustani classical music in Benares, India and conducted fieldwork research on the Qawwali Sufi music genre. He has been a founding member of several music projects spanning from shoegazer, ambient and the Avant Garde to blues and other genres. A guitar player since age 15, he currently focuses on the oud, buzuq, yaylı tanbur, cümbüş and lâvta, and lives in rural South Central Wisconsin with his family.

Viroqua singer/songwriters Christina Dollhausen, Shawn Neary, and Douglas Detrick will each play a set of music in a Songwriters Circle concert at Arkadia on October 16, 2026. Assembled by Detrick, this group of like-minded artists will each sing original songs in 25 minute sets with two intermissions. Each artist will have a guest artist or two joining in, and may unite as a trio for a collaborative song at the end of the show. Listeners can expect a diverse range of music with deep feeling, all in a relaxed yet focused listening environment.

Joseph Haydn Op. 77 No. 1Robert Schumann Op. 41. No. 1The Arbor Stellae String Quartet, newly formed in 2026, comprises Leanne Kelso and Michelle Elliott, violins, Spencer Martin, viola, and Eric Miller, cello. Its members are variously well known to audiences in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and beyond as fine chamber musicians, orchestral players, and historical performance experts.
This program features two quartets which both happen to be the first of the last three quartets of both Haydn and Schumann's output, when both composers were at the height of their powers, thus representing some of the finest writing in the genre.
MICHELLE ELLIOTT was a founding member of the Vinca Quartet from 2003-2008, during which time the quartet was awarded a string quartet residency with the Tákacs Quartet at the University of Colorado. The Vincas were prizewinners of the Fischoff, Chesapeake, Plowman, and Premio Paolo Borciani Competition and they were selected to participate in the Banff Summer Music Festival, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, International Musicians Seminar at Prussia Cove, Juilliard String Quartet Seminar, Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland, and the Emerson Quartet’s Carnegie Hall Training Workshop. Michelle received her BM degree from the University of Illinois, as well as MM and AD degrees from Yale University. She also received her DMA at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Michelle’s primary teachers include Edward Dusinberre, Syoko Aki, Danwen Jiang, Sherban Lupu, Dr. Myron Kartman, Zenaida Gilels, Terrine Gomez, and Mary Nagy. Michelle currently resides in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and teaches privately in her home studio, First Lutheran School, and Luther High School. She joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in the fall of 2022.
LEANNE KELSO teaches violin and viola at UW-Whitewater where she has won several awards, including ASTA’s Wisconsin Teacher of the Year. She is also the assistant concertmaster of Madison Symphony and Wisconsin Chamber Orchestras, and artist-teacher at the Illinois Chamber Music Festival. Performing often with the Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society chamber music festival, she has collaborated with Toby Appel, Karmit Zori, Parry Karp, and Axel Strauss, among many other inspiring colleagues. Other recent projects include a solo performances of the Beethoven Violin Concerto and Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy with Symphony 847 in Chicago and a presentation on violin pedagogy at the national American String Teachers Convention. Leanne studied modern and Baroque violin with Karen Clarke at Florida State and continues to enjoy early music while performing with the Madison Bach Musicians and leading the Baroque Ensemble at UW-Whitewater. She earned her master’s degree studying with Vartan Manoogian, and was a member of the New World Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas.
SPENCER MARTIN A performer on both modern and historical instruments,SPENCER MARTIN has worked as a violinist, violist, conductor, and teacher throughout the United States, Canada, Israel, Central America, and Europe. He currently serves as Principal Viola of the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra and performs with the Lyra Baroque Orchestra. He has also performed frequently with the viola sections of the Minnesota Orchestra, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Wichita Symphony Orchestra, and Orchestra Iowa. His performances have been featured on NPR, CBC, and MPR broadcasts, and his 2012 recording, Gems Rediscovered, was released to critical acclaim.
Spencer holds degrees from the University of Minnesota, Wichita State University, and Butler University and serves on the music faculty of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

ERIC MILLER is a viola da gambist and cellist (baroque and modern) based in the driftless region of Wisconsin, frequently performing solo and chamber recitals on viola da gamba, baroque cello, and modern cello. He has performed with the Wisconsin Baroque Ensemble, Madison Bach Musicians, the Eurythmy Spring Valley Ensemble, Just Bach, Musica Maxima, Madison Choral Project, Madison Youth Choirs, and American Players Theater. Beyond the sphere of classical music, he has recorded and released several hours of improvised lo-fi electronic music with his duo, Basidium. As an educator, he currently teaches private studios in Viroqua, La Crosse, and Madison, WI. He has taught at the Madison Early Music Festival, the Blue Lake Family Suzuki Camp, the Madison Bach Musicians Summer Chamber Music Workshop, is a past director of the Viola da Gamba Society of America's Young Players' Weekend workshop. He holds degrees from Northern Illinois University where he studied with Marc Johnson of the Vermeer quartet and the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he studied with Parry Karp of the Pro Arte Quartet.

She taught in eurythmy trainings in Dornach and London, founded and directed the Jerusalem Eurythmy Ensemble and the Jerusalem Academy of Eurythmy, and was an instructor in the Jerusalem Waldorf Teacher Bachelor Program in David Yellin Academic College. Jan performs and holds Master Classes at various venues worldwide.

This lecture will seek to help us understand and bring us closer to that spiritual being known as Michael. In particular, we will focus on Michael's capacity to embody the laws of dynamic polarity, meaning the ability to hold in balance, and bring into harmony, realities that appear to be opposites or in opposition to one another. Using this lens, we will especially focus on Michael's relationship to western civilization, human individuality, and to the forces of modern technology.
In the workshop the next day, Jan, Clay and I will elaborate on the mysteries of dynamic polarity as these express themselves in Michael's relation to the seven classical planets of our solar system. With the help of Jan Ranck, we will use eurythmy to explore in particular the way Michael works to harmonize the forces of Mars and Venus.

Born in the USA, Jan Ranck studied music and comparative arts at Indiana University in Bloomington. She accompanied the London Stage Group on their 1976 USA tour and went on to study eurythmy at the Eurythmeum in Dornach, Switzerland, where she subsequently served as a teacher. In 1984 she joined the faculty of The London School of Eurythmy. She left there to complete a training in eurythmy therapy in Stuttgart in 1989, moving afterward to Israel, where she founded the Jerusalem Eurythmy Ensemble (1990) and the Jerusalem Academy of Eurythmy (1992). In 1999 she also joined the faculty of the Jerusalem Waldorf Teacher Bachelor Program in David Yellin Academic College. Jan was a student of Lea van der Pals and a colleague of her successor in the subject of Tone Eurythmy Therapy, Annemarie Baeschlin, and was involved with compositional and editorial suggestions for their publication “Ton-Heileurythmie”, Verlag am Goetheanum 1991, published in English in 2009 as “Tone Eurythmy Therapy” by the Medical Section at the Goetheanum. She continues to hold Master Classes in various venues worldwide, including the Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland.

This year, we are going back to the original format of 12 dates over the course of the year, each elected to provide the perfect context for reflecting on the season (meaning the Moon will always be in the same sign as the Sun for these sessions).
All who are interested in the art of Astrology, we invite you to put down your fancy apps and look up towards the sky. Our forebears were able to viscerally intuit the vast network of insights and influences that sky country is constantly reflecting down onto Earth. Let’s claim our inheritance and hone our skills by attempting to actually feel and sense what is happening in the sky.
One easy way to learn more about Astrology is to track the movements of the Moon. As she circles the entire Zodiac every month, visiting every sign – and thereby also making every possible aspect and placement therein, we can compile our monthly observations, which allows us to comprehend notable characteristics and signatures of any celestial placements. We will make use of this perpetual cycle and attempt to glean what we can by checking in on her once a month.
Our meet-ups involve a quick update on the current weather, then we orient ourselves towards the Moon’s physical position and attempt a receptive sensing and inner participation with what we find there, then we end with free range feedback and discussion.

FRIDAY RIVER FISH DINNER AND FUN RAISER
We are happy to be hosting a Friday River Fish Dinner, lovingly prepared by chef extraordinaires Justin Trussoni and Lucy Spangler-Gore. This feast will feature all locally sourced organic fare, including cherrywood grilled fish cakes, coleslaw and roasted root vegetables on the side. We will also have an array of desserts and drinks for sale. Vegetarian options will also be available. The price is twenty dollars per entree.
